Movie Night

July 19th will be the most interesting day for summer movies of the year, and arguably since before the pandemic. In the same day two very similar and very anticipated movies will come out : Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie”. In anticipation of this day, we will dedicate the next movie nights to the two directors. First up: Greta Gerwig!

Gerwig’s career as a director started quite recently, with her movie “Ladybird” (2017) (after a first co-directing effort in 2008 with “Nights and Weekends”), she gained a lot of critical and awards attention, which carried on with her following “Little Women” (2019). Her care and affection for the characters on the screen is actually something which she carried over from her longer career as an actor. In particular, with her husband Noah Bumbach, she was one of the strongest voices of the so called Mumblecore film style, and a performer deeply connected to New York and to theater. For this reason, next week we will screen “Frances Ha” (2012), a character study in which she plays the main role.
